Faces of Laradon: Nathan and Jolene’s Story

“I have five kids and six grandkids,” says Jolene, a Program Coordinator for Laradon’s Community Living Services.

“Nathan, do you remember the names of my kids?”

Nathan, Laradon’s Independent Living Services program participant, smiles and replies, “Yes, of course—like Gary…” He then continues to list the rest of the names with ease.

This conversation is just an insight into the bond and understanding between Nathan and Jolene. A year ago, Jolene started working as Nathan’s Program Coordinator.

This service is designed for participants who meet certain criteria, providing them with the opportunity to live independently. Currently, Nathan lives in an apartment on his parent’s plot of land south of Denver. Jolene will go there twice a week to meet with Nathan and teach him independent life skills-like, daily needs, laundry, cleaning, cooking, budgeting and more.

“Anything that I can do to support Nathan to be more successful in the future so he can continue to independently live by himself,” emphasizes Jolene.

When Nathan is not at his apartment, he is doing the activities he loves, like bike riding or spending time with his therapy pony, Stinger. Nathan does everything from brushing to walking Stinger, which shows immense dedication and responsibility.

As 2024 ends, Nathan’s commitment and sense of responsibility will carry over into the new year. Familiar faces, including Jolene, will also remain by his side in 2025.

“Do you like hanging out with Jolene?” Jolene smiles and asks.

Nathan nods his head, “Yes, I do.”

Nathan’s new goal for 2025 is to find new job opportunities in the workforce. He plans to continue to work with Laradon’s Employment Program coaches to further his career. Jolene also hopes to come alongside Nathan to help him build his social skills in other areas of his life.

Jolene says thoughtfully, “There’s a class I think Nathan might really enjoy. It’s about relationships. Nathan has mentioned he wants a girlfriend.”

Looking at her with a smile, Nathan says, “I think I already know about relationships.”

Jolene tilts her head, “Oh, you do?”

Nathan nods confidently and looks at Jolene kindly, “Yup.”
