Fatherhood can be a life-changing for many. For Larry, raising his son Roger, who has an intellectual and developmental disability, has opened his heart to a profound understanding of patience, strength, and the very essence of advocacy for marginalized groups.
Since 2002, Roger has spent his days immersed in the vibrant community of Laradon’s Adult Day Program. The staff always look forward to seeing Roger’s smiling face and often speak extensively about the loving father-son relationship he shares with his dad Larry.
“Getting Roger involved in something like Laradon has been great not only for him but for our family,” Larry, Roger’s dad, shared.
Larry often takes on the special role of personally dropping off and picking up Roger from Laradon, a choice that speaks volumes about their connection, setting them apart from most participants who take the bus.
For Larry, these car rides are more than just trips, they’re treasured moments of connection. With the windows down and the music turned up, he and Roger cruise through familiar streets, singing along and laughing together. It’s in these simple, joyful drives that their bond grows stronger—especially when Roger’s favorite tunes fill the car. Music isn’t just background noise for them; it’s a shared language, a rhythm that brings them closer with every mile.

This duo’s relationship has only deepened and grown stronger over the 23 years Roger has been at Laradon.
When Roger isn’t at Laradon, their family loves to venture out into the community, creating new memories together. Just last weekend, they shared smiles at Build-A-Bear before heading off for a fun game of bowling.
“Roger loves to bowl, and I like being able to do things together,” Larry said.
As close as the pair is, their journey has not always been easy. Larry has diligently learned skills to help Roger navigate moments of crisis, while also striving to ensure his own needs are met. Striking this balance as a father has been challenging, but Larry believes that being involved and embracing the whole experience is the best way to learn and grow.
“I would tell other fathers to just go with it and be a part of it,” he shared empathetically. “Be as active as you can because I think that’s the biggest key to a strong and healthy bond. Some days are quite hectic but embrace it.”
This Father’s Day, it is important to recognize fathers, like Larry ,who love their children unconditionally. Fathers that pour their hearts into loving and supporting their children through every struggle and celebrating every triumph. Their love shines brightest of all.

This Father’s Day, honor the love, patience, and everyday moments that define fatherhood. At Laradon, dads like Larry create powerful bonds—one car ride, one song, one smile at a time. Your gift helps make these moments possible for families across our programs. Celebrate Father’s Day by supporting connections that last a lifetime.
