Say Hello To Laradon’s New Volunteer Manager!

Laradon is thrilled to welcome Karla Zelvis to our team as the volunteer manager. Check out her welcome to Laradon letter below!

Hello, Laradon community!

My name is Karla Zelvis and I am the new gal on campus! I accepted the role as Volunteer and Special Events Manager in January and have enjoyed meeting and working with all of you thus far.

Let me tell you a bit about me! I grew up in the Midwest and moved to Colorado when I was 11. I lived in Littleton and then later in Denver, mostly the north side of town (the old Italian neighborhood where the Calabrese’s called home) for many years.

I volunteered for several years with Volunteers of America Meals on Wheels program delivering food to folks who are elderly in Denver. I loved visiting with them, usually chit chatting about movies and family. Often times I was the only person they would see outside of their one family member that week.

I worked as a Director of Education at Four Mile Historic Park for 6 years, where our teachers, volunteers, and I taught 3rd and 4th graders Colorado pioneer history. My team and I developed new programs for kiddos and brought our summer and winter history camps through the process of State Child Care Licensing Certification.

I also worked as the Earth Sciences Volunteer Coordinator at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for 4 ½ years, where I interviewed, trained and provided ongoing education to our geology, paleontology and dinosaur/evolution exhibit volunteers, which numbered close to 500. When you see me, please ask me any dinosaur and/or pioneer history trivia to test my memory!

For fun I like to spend time with my honey, watch movies, go to art shows, make jewelry and ride my bike. I am six foot two and one half and have been over six foot since I was 16. Are my pants sometimes short? Sure! Do I pretend I planned it that way? Absolutely!

I am thrilled to be at Laradon and can’t wait to work with more of you! Please watch out for some neatO opportunities to volunteer with us in the near future!

Warm regards,

Karla
