For over 77 years, Laradon has been serving individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). While the dedication of staff and generosity of donors are vital, the unwavering commitment of its volunteers forms the very heart of its success. These selfless individuals freely dedicate their time to enriching the lives of others.
Laradon currently benefits from over 100 active volunteers annually, alongside a remarkable contribution of over 1,000 volunteers through its long-standing partnership with the Colorado Elks Association. Each volunteer plays an important role in positively impacting Laradon. April marks National Volunteer Appreciation Month and Karla Zelvis, Laradon’s Volunteer and Special Events Manager, has a special message for all of Laradon’s volunteers.
“It takes a lot of energy, grit and beautiful kindness to give back to a marginalized population such as this. When I see people give their time long term, I know they’re hooked! It warms my heart to connect people in this way,.” Karla explained.
Among the many dedicated individuals, Bryan Penny and Suzanne Bradeen are two volunteers who continue to go above and beyond

Bryan started his volunteer journey with Laradon in 2024, when his 29-year-old son, who has schizoaffective disorder and a frontal lobe impairment, moved to Colorado. As a family member, Bryan saw first-hand how incredibly hard it was to find services and support for someone in the IDD community. It was then when he knew he wanted to give back to the IDD community in some way, he just didn’t know how at that moment.
That’s why when Bryan was connected to Laradon through Laradon Society Board Member Chad Dreier, he took it as a sign to get involved.
“The thing that impacted me the most is just how genuine the people here are, both the staff and the clients,” he shares, “My advice is to never think that you’re not helping, because even if you’re just sitting there talking to somebody or reading them a book, they’re going to have a better day because you were here. And that’s, what really helps me come and stay involved.”
Since joining Laradon, Bryan has enthusiastically contributed to various programs, from assisting with Christmas setups and talent shows in the Adult Day Program to actively participating in the “Shakespeare in the Parking Lot” event. Karla recalls how Bryan’s genuine kindness and acceptance during the Shakespeare event deeply resonated with the participants, who overwhelmingly requested his return.
Each volunteer opportunity has grown Bryan’s connection to the IDD community.
Suzanne’s path to Laradon began through her involvement with the Elks and a strong belief in the power of education.
Joining Lardon’s Society Board of Directors in 2009, she was immediately drawn to its mission and the individuals it serves. As an active member of the Littleton Elks Lodge, Suzanne has become a vital bridge, bringing in thousands of dollars in donations and countless volunteer hours through the Elks’ support.

Karla describes Suzanne as one of her go-to Elks volunteers. She is always willing to step up to help and her energy is infectious to all those around her.
Over the years, Suzanne has been a consistent volunteer, enthusiastically participating in events such as Adult Prom, art shows, Christmas parties, and regularly spending time with the participants.
One moment that has stuck with Suzanne was when a participant wanted to complete a 5k, so Laradon organized a race at the Dick’s Sporting Goods track and had people come out to cheer and volunteer.
“I’ve never seen such happy people going around the track and it has never left me. It’s always touched my heart. Just something that was as simple as running around a track and seeing how much fun they were having, made me care more.” Suzanne shares as she recalls this memory.
With 16 years of dedication to Laradon, Suzanne passionately encourages others to get involved. She believes that a simple tour is all it takes to witness the “magic” of Laradon and become a lifelong supporter.
“I’ve encouraged people to come and tour. Then they can really see what we do,” she advises. ” Once they see it, they want to be involved.”
Suzanne’s dedication extends beyond bringing the Elks to Laradon; she has also brought Laradon to the Elks. Through her tireless efforts, Suzanne helped long-time participant and board member Dennis become an Elks member. This significant milestone made Dennis the first person with IDD to become an official Elk, a testament to Suzanne’s unwavering love and support for Laradon.
